Military Buildings are buildings that can train Military Units. Each Building can only recruit one kind of unit. A Military Building has two slots unlocked by default, and you may purchase two additional slots by paying a certain amount of Gold and Supplies. There is also a fifth slot, but it can only be unlocked through Diamonds. Also take note that the price to unlock slots gets higher the more you unlock.

Recruiting units does not affect your Population.

Your Attacking and Defending Army may only consist of eight units. It is highly recommended that you look at what units the enemy (NPC, can't see other player's units) will use to defend a province, and then pick an army accordingly. Through time you will learn what units are weak against what units etc. If your enemy is highly focused on melee classes, bring a bunch of ranged classes and pick them out one by one from safe distance.

It might also be worth to remember that some units get attack and/or defense bonuses from various obstructions on the Battlefield. For example, light units (Spearfighter, Soldier, etc) receive a defense bonus by standing inside a Bush(+2) or Tree(+3). Ranged units, such as the Archer, receive an attack bonus by standing on rocks(+1-2), and artillery units receive a bonus by standing on a hill. Knowing this may very well be what decides whether you win or lose. Also, mounted units can not cross over Rocks, neither heavy units nor fast units can cross over Swamps, and Swamps slow units down.
